“In the shadowed closes of Edinburgh, death became a business.”
In 1828, as medical science expanded in Scotland, demand for cadavers outpaced legal supply. Into that gap stepped William Burke and William Hare — two men who realised fresh bodies commanded a price.
What began as opportunistic profit soon turned deliberate. Lodgers disappeared. Payments were made in cash. Bodies were delivered for dissection, no questions asked.
The discovery of what had been happening shocked Edinburgh and transformed a city’s fear into national outrage.
This week, the Archive revisits a case where progress and poverty collided — and where human life became inventory.
Some crimes exploit the living.
Others profit from the dead.
