Pepi Davies spent over 30 years inside the UK prison system — including 27 years on one sentence, much of it in Category A dispersal prisons and more than 8 years in solitary confinement.
In this interview, Pepi goes into detail about his time inside the controversial Hull Special Unit — a prison experiment where some of the most violent men in Britain were given unusual freedoms, until one of them walked out and ended the experiment overnight.
He also speaks openly about surviving some of the harshest conditions the UK prison system can impose, including over two months in a strip cell and years in isolation. Pepi shares his first-hand experiences of living alongside some of Britain’s most notorious prisoners, including Patrick Mackay, Fred Lowe, Dennis Nilsen and Robert Maudsley, and what those encounters taught him about the reality of high-security prisons.
This is a rare insight into parts of the prison system the public never sees, from someone who lived through it between 1982 and 2009.
