It's February 1788. The British flag has been raised, the law has been laid down and Sydney Cove was beginning to resemble a settlement.
Governor Arthur Phillip had done a sterling job so far ... but it was soon to dawn on him that he had overlooked bringing out some with agricultural know-how. Phillip assumed government run farms would produce the food required but they badly underperformed.
Two years later and around 10% of Sydney Cove had died of hunger ... and everyone else feared they'd all be dead soon.
By 1790, Sydney Cove was on the verge of collapse. But a convict had stepped forward and convinced Governor Phillip to give him some land so he could demonstrate the benefits of privately owned farms.
That convict was James Ruse and his agricultural revolution saved New South Wales.
