Four of the stated purposes of the book of 1 John – four of the reasons why John wrote this letter - are to lead its readers to: 1) participate in deep fellowship with one another; 2) experience complete joy; 3) keep from sinning; and 4) have assurance that we are truly children of God - to know that we are born again.
John was compelled by the Holy Spirit to write this letter, because there were others around trying to “deceive” (2:26) and mis-lead God’s people. The Bible plainly teaches that it is possible for a follower of Jesus to really and actually know and experience these four things: fellowship, joy, freedom from sin, eternal life. Our prayer and aim in this teaching series is for each of us – and therefore all of us as a church family – to know and experience all of these in our journey with Christ.
