Breaking news alert! You are mortal. Hopefully that is not news to you, but if you are the average person, you don't think about that if you don't have to. It is not a pleasant thought, so you avoid the thought.
But, at different times, you experience something that reminds you of your mortality. Ash Wednesday is one of those reminders... as these words are spoken again and again - "Dust you are and to dust you will return."
In this sermon, we look at a parable that Jesus told to people who "were confident in their own righteousness." This parable had two men - one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. They both approached God differently.
Jesus uses this parable to teach how every mortal human ought to approach the immortal God - with humility. Every human ought to approach the immortal God this way, because all mortal humans are sinful.
God loves sinners. In fact, he loved sinners so much that he sent his own Son to live and die for the sins of the world. So that when a sinner comes to him and says, "God have mercy on me a sinner", God will forgive that sinner.
The Apostle Paul's words rings true: "This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel." (2 Timothy 1:10)
