This is the first trilogy LJ Andrews Broken Kingdom series, The Northern Kingdom: Curse of Shadow and Thorns, Court of Ash and Ice, and the Crown of Blood and Ruin. The author sets the stage with the first book, progressively growing the characters and storyline. The Spice level isn't super high in these, but there is enough to keep you intrigued.
