The Bible says clearly that we are going to have trials in life. Some of the suffering we go through is simply a result of our fallen world. Sometimes it's our own sin or the sin of other people. When we go through difficulties, we are encouraged to "stand"! The Greek word is "hupomone" which means to stay under the trial until God lifts it.
