In 1958, a letter arrived at Rachel Carson’s home that would change the world.
It was from her friend Olga Huckins in Massachusetts. State officials had sprayed DDT over her bird sanctuary, claiming it would protect against mosquitoes. The next morning, Olga found seven dead songbirds on her lawn.
