The first Easter didn't begin with celebration but with confusion. And in John 20 the resulting confusion lead two responses: fear and doubt. But when Jesus finds his disciples hiding behind locked doors, he doesn't scold them or shame them. Instead, the resurrected Lord speaks this word over his followers (and us) in the midst of fear and doubt: "Peace be with you."
