MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY | October 9, 1635
The sentence was simple: Roger Williams had to leave.
His offense was not theft, violence, or rebellion.
His offense was an idea.
Williams believed the government had no authority over a person's conscience. In seventeenth-century Massachusetts, that belief challenged the very foundation of a colony where religious and civil authority were closely connected.
The Puritans had fled religious persecution in England. But Williams believed their new society was repeating some of the same mistakes.
Today on The Write Team Daily, we explore the remarkable story of Roger Williams, his banishment from Massachusetts, his dangerous winter escape, and the founding of Providence, Rhode Island. His commitment to religious liberty helped establish principles that would eventually become central to the American understanding of freedom of religion.
