September 18, 1975. San Francisco.
After more than a year of kidnapping, radical politics, bank robberies, violence, and a nationwide manhunt, federal agents finally captured Patty Hearst, granddaughter of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst.
Nineteen-year-old Hearst had been kidnapped in 1974 by the radical Symbionese Liberation Army. Weeks later, she shocked the country by announcing that she had joined her captors and adopted the name “Tania.” Then came the unforgettable images of Hearst carrying a weapon during a San Francisco bank robbery.
Was she a kidnapped victim acting under coercion? A willing participant? Or something in between? Hearst's arrest, trial, conviction, commuted sentence, and eventual presidential pardon made her story one of the most controversial criminal cases of the twentieth century—and raised questions about coercion, captivity, and free will that remain debated today.
Then, celebrate National First Love Day, revisit the first chiropractic adjustment, remember the creation of the CIA, and look back at the final episode of Guiding Light after an extraordinary 72-year broadcasting run.
Plus, relive one of the strangest finishes in the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, celebrate teen idol Frankie Avalon, remember Mi'kmaq Chief Henri Membertou, and continue our journey through the 67th verse of each biblical book with Proverbs 3:12 and the reminder that God's correction is evidence of a loving Father who desires to shape our character.
