Today's episode of The Write Team Daily returns to September 12, 1857, when the SS Central America disappeared beneath the Atlantic Ocean carrying hundreds of passengers—and a fortune in California Gold Rush treasure.
Known as “The Ship of Gold,” the steamship was traveling toward New York when it encountered a powerful hurricane off the Carolina coast. Passengers and crew desperately fought to keep the vessel afloat, but on September 12 the Central America finally surrendered to the storm. Hundreds died, and tons of gold vanished beneath more than a mile of ocean.
The treasure remained lost for more than 130 years. Then, in 1988, explorers located the wreck roughly 160 miles off the South Carolina coast, leading to one of the most spectacular deep-sea treasure recoveries in history.
Then, celebrate National Video Game Day and the National Day of Encouragement, discover the development of synthetic rubber, remember beloved pets on National Pet Memorial Day, revisit the premiere of Bonanza, and return to the historic agreement that cleared the way for German reunification.
Plus, relive Arbroath's unbelievable 36–0 soccer victory, celebrate actress Sydney Sweeney, remember the life, music, faith, and legacy of Johnny Cash, and continue our “6:7” devotional journey with 2 Chronicles 6:7 and a reminder that sometimes God calls one generation to build the foundation for the next.
