THE DECISION THAT CHANGED THE KOREAN WAR| October 7, 1950
North/South Korea Border
United Nations forces had overwhelming momentum. They had overcome an early summer surge by North Korea to retake Seoul and push the communist troops back across the border that divided Korea in two.
By that definition, South Korea could claim victory. But was victory enough? The United Nations -- along with leaders in Washington, D.C. -- had a decision to make.
Was pushing the North Koreans back across the 38th parallel enough? Or, could they use the momentum in October 1949 to achieve an even larger objective -- a reunified Korea?
On October 7, 1950, the UN announced its decision. It was a choice that still has ramifications to this day, 76 years later.
