Description

Dearly beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, the story of the Ethiopian eunuch is a fitting conclusion to the theme of breaching temple boundaries and bringing the scattered and excluded back into full fellowship with the people of God. After this story, Luke goes on to speak of the call of Saul of Tarsus and the full inclusion of the Gentiles. But even before the full inclusion of Gentiles under the ministry of the apostle to the Gentiles, Luke is not-so-subtly preparing readers by showing that not just Jews from every nation under heaven, but also the injured, disabled, exotic, and outcast are now welcome to come and worship Jesus on terms of full equality and membership. It is a glorious truth that explains why we are not second-class citizens in the kingdom of Heaven. The Ethiopian eunuch believed and was baptized, and thus became a true Christian and full member of the church of Jesus Christ. Luke is showing us that the reign of Christ is even for exotic people from exotic places, and that what's needed is simply to hear the word, believe it, and be baptized.
