Description

Peter got arrested because he had the temerity to breach the Temple's boundaries and announce that Jesus is the true prophet to whom the people of God must listen. In his speech before the council, after a night in jail, he goes even further, announcing that Jesus is the true cornerstone of the new temple, and strongly implying that he and the rest of the apostles are the true builders of the new temple. Well, that claim gets worked out in practice in this chapter, as we see the battle for leadership over the people of God conclusively won by the apostles. The word of God is not bound, though the apostles go to jail. In fact, the people of God listen to the word of God as it comes through the apostles, who are shown to be the leaders of the true Israel and the builders of the true temple. The old temple imprisons the new for a night, but it can't stop the building of its replacement, which is not a physical building but a renewed people of God founded on Jesus as their chief cornerstone.
