Sin has immediate effects, all of which we see in Genesis 3: guilt, shame and fear. One of the primary jobs of the church is to preach the truth about sin. God's working in a person's heart is evidenced by a growing conviction over their sin. When we experience guilt, shame, and fear, only then are we able to see Jesus for the Savior that he is.
