Description

After exploring the complex cultural contexts of the Global South, the second half of Collective Reflections from the Frontlines of Animal Advocacy turns to Europe, one of the earlier centers of the modern animal rights movement. The history here is longer, but the challenges remain. From policy work and public outreach to more confrontational tactics, advocates keep testing what works under different legal and social conditions.

We begin in Austria with Julian and Neni from Verein Gegen Tierfabriken (VGT). Both are committed abolitionists, yet their work has pushed them toward pragmatic pressure campaigns. Are they fighting for “bigger cages,” or holding the line without compromise? Drawing on lived experience—including serious legal pressure faced by their organization—they reflect on why “just promote veganism” often isn’t enough, and why security awareness matters.

Next, we move to Ireland. Laura, founder of the National Animal Rights Association (NARA), looks back on more than two decades of advocacy. She points to early mistakes, especially the lack of local investigation, and she criticizes gender problems in some outreach styles. For her, long-term advocacy depends on strong alliances and on committed, capable activists—not just bigger numbers. She also speaks openly about how anger, and a refusal to compromise, have kept her going.

Finally, we enter a more controversial part of UK movement history with Max, a former Animal Liberation Front (ALF) member. He explains the logic of direct action and questions the limits of gentle persuasion: when a house is on fire, do we hand out flyers, or do we break the door down and pull people out? He also shares how he thinks about “winnable targets,” and about strategies centered on economic pressure.

Whether through gradual reform or stronger social pressure, this episode offers a simple reminder: there’s no single formula for animal advocacy. What matters is finding approaches that are workable, effective, and sustainable in your own context.
