🗣️ BILINGUAL SCRIPT (中英对照 · 辅助理解)
Patrick: Welcome to another episode of Beyond English. Patrick here.
Mandy: And Mandy here. Patrick, I have been playing detective today.
Patrick: Detective Mandy? That sounds interesting. What are you investigating?
Patrick:
Mandy: Well, my car was making a strange noise this morning. I thought it was the engine, but the mechanic checked it. He said the engine is fine. So, we know it is not the engine.
Patrick: I see. So you removed the engine from the list of possible problems.
Mandy: Exactly. Is there a professional phrase for this? When we decide something is NOT the cause or the answer?
Patrick: Yes, there is. The phrase is: Rule out. You ruled out the engine.
Mandy: Rule out. Like using a ruler?
Mandy: Rule out。
Patrick: Think of it like drawing a line. Imagine you have a list of possibilities written on a paper.
Patrick: When you check one and realize it is not the answer, you draw a line through it. You cross it out. You "rule it out." It is no longer an option.
Mandy: That is a very clear image. Drawing a line through the bad options. So, can I use this in daily life?
Patrick: Definitely. Imagine we are deciding what to eat for dinner.
Patrick:
Mandy: Okay. I am hungry.
Mandy: 好的。
Patrick: I can say: "I had pizza for lunch, so let's rule out Italian food."
Mandy: That is very natural. What about at work? This sounds like a problem-solving word.
Patrick: It is essential in business. When you are fixing a problem or making a strategy, you need to narrow down your choices.
Mandy: So if we are looking for a new office location?
Mandy:
Patrick: You could say: "This building is too expensive. We have to rule it out."
Mandy: That sounds decisive. Now, Patrick, is "Rule out" the same as "Ignore"?
Patrick: No, they are different. "Ignore" means you don't pay attention to it. You don't even check it.
Mandy: And rule out?
Mandy: 那 rule out 呢?
Patrick: "Rule out" means you considered it, you checked it, and you decided "no." It is an active decision based on logic.
Mandy: So detectives rule out suspects, they don't ignore them.
Mandy:
Patrick: Exactly! Listeners, what options are you ruling out today?
Mandy: Tell us in the comments.
Mandy:
Patrick: Thanks for spending time with us. Have a great day!
Patrick:
