🗣️ BILINGUAL SCRIPT (中英对照 · 辅助理解)
Patrick: Hello everyone. Good to see you again. Welcome to Beyond English. I'm Patrick.
Patrick: 大家好。很高兴再次见到你们。欢迎来到 Beyond English 不止英语。我是 Patrick。
Mandy: And I'm Mandy. Patrick, I am exhausted today. My brain is tired, and my body is tired.
Mandy: 我是 Mandy。Patrick,我今天累坏了。脑子累,身体也累。
Patrick: That sounds intense. What have you been doing?
Patrick: 听起来强度很大。你都在干什么?
Mandy: Well, I went to the gym this morning to work out. That was the physical part.
Mandy: 嗯,我今天早上去了健身房锻炼 (work out)。那是身体的部分。
Mandy: But then, I spent three hours looking at my bank account, trying to make the numbers match. I just couldn't solve the math problem.
Mandy: 但后来,我花了三个小时看我的银行账户,试图让数字对上。我就是解不开那个数学题。
Patrick: I see. So you worked out your body, but you couldn't work out your budget?
Patrick: 我明白了。所以你锻炼 (work out) 了身体,但没法算出 (work out) 你的预算?
Mandy: Exactly! Wait, we use the same phrase for both?
Mandy: 没错!等等,我们两件事都用同一个短语?
Patrick: Yes. "Work out" is a very flexible phrasal verb.
Patrick: 是的。"Work out" 是一个非常灵活的动词短语。
Patrick: Meaning number one is physical exercise. Meaning number two is to solve a problem or find a solution.
Patrick: 第一个意思是体育锻炼。第二个意思是解决问题或找到方案。
Mandy: That is interesting. How can I visualize the "solving" meaning?
Mandy: 这很有趣。我该如何具象化“解决”这个意思?
Patrick: Imagine a knot in a rope. It is tight and messy. To fix it, you have to use your fingers and effort to untie it. You "work" the knot "out" until the rope is straight again.
Patrick: 想象绳子上打了个结。又紧又乱。要解开它,你得用手指费劲去解。你通过“努力 (work)”把结“解开 (out)”,直到绳子再次变直。
Mandy: I like that. Un-knotting the problem. So, are there other phrases for fixing things?
Mandy: 我喜欢这个。解开问题。那么,还有其他修补事情的短语吗?
Patrick: Definitely. If the problem is confusing and you need to use your brain to understand it, you can say: Figure out.
Patrick: 当然。如果问题令人困惑,你需要动脑子去理解它,你可以说:Figure out(想出/弄明白)。
Mandy: Like "Figure out a riddle"?
Mandy: 就像“解开谜题”?
Patrick: Exactly. And if the situation is messy or disorganized, like a messy schedule, you can use: Sort out.
Patrick: 没错。如果情况混乱或无序,比如混乱的日程表,你可以用:Sort out(整理/处理)。
Mandy: Okay, back to "Work out." Can I use it for relationships?
Mandy: 好的,回到 "Work out"。我可以用它来形容人际关系吗?
Patrick: Yes. If you and a friend had a fight, you can say: "We talked for hours and finally worked things out."
Patrick: 可以。如果你和朋友吵架了,你可以说:“我们聊了几个小时,终于把事情解决了(和好了)。”
Mandy: That sounds nice. It means the relationship is fixed. What about in business?
Mandy: 听起来不错。这意味着关系修复了。那在商务中呢?
Patrick: It is very professional. You can say: "We need to work out a deal with the new client." It implies negotiation and effort.
Patrick: 这非常专业。你可以说:“我们需要和新客户谈成 (work out) 一笔交易。”这暗示了谈判和努力。
Mandy: Negotiation and effort. Got it. Now, Patrick, is there a time I shouldn't use it?
Mandy: 谈判和努力。懂了。现在,Patrick,有没有什么时候我不应该用它?
Patrick: Be careful not to confuse "Work out" with "Work outside."
Patrick: 小心不要把 "Work out" 和 "Work outside" 搞混了。
Mandy: Haha, working outdoors?
Mandy: 哈哈,在户外工作?
Patrick: Right. If you say "I like to work out," people think you like the gym. If you say "I like to work outside," people think you like fresh air.
Patrick: 对。如果你说 "I like to work out",人们会认为你喜欢健身房。如果你说 "I like to work outside",人们会认为你喜欢新鲜空气。
Mandy: That is a big difference! Listeners, is there a problem you are trying to work out today?
Mandy: 这区别可大了!听众朋友们,你们今天有什么问题正在试图解决吗?
Patrick: Maybe a math problem? Or a life problem?
Patrick: 也许是数学题?还是生活难题?
Mandy: Tell us in the comments.
Mandy: 在评论区告诉我们。
Patrick: Thanks for listening. Go beyond words.
Patrick: 谢谢收听。超越词汇。
