Mandy: Ugh! This is so unfair! I am doing everything, and he is doing nothing!
Patrick: Whoa, that sounds frustrating. Welcome to "Beyond English," where we help you find the right words for your feelings. What is happening?
Mandy: I am working on a group project. I am writing the report, but my partner is just playing games on his phone. I want to tell him to stop being lazy.
Patrick: I see. You need a specific phrase for this. When someone stops working when they should be busy, we say they are: Slack off.
Mandy: Slack off? What does "slack" mean?
Mandy: Slack off?"Slack"
Patrick: Imagine a rope. When you pull it tight to lift something, it is strong. It has tension.
Mandy: Okay, a tight rope.
Mandy:
Patrick: But if the rope is loose and hanging down, we say the rope is "slack." It is not doing any work.
Mandy: That is a great image! So my partner is like a loose rope. He is useless right now.
Patrick: Exactly. To "slack off" means to work less hard than usual, or to do nothing while you are getting paid.
Mandy: Can I use this at home? For example, with my brother?
Mandy:
Patrick: Yes. If you are cleaning the house and he is watching TV, you can say: "Stop slacking off and help me wash the dishes!"
Mandy: I will use that. What about at work? Is it safe to say?
Mandy:
Patrick: Be careful. It is a negative thing. Managers do not like people who slack off.
Patrick: You might hear: "He was fired because he was slacking off too much."
Mandy: That is serious. But Patrick, is this the same as "Relax"?
Patrick: No. "Relax" is good. You relax after work to get energy back.
Patrick: "Slack off" is bad. You are avoiding work when you should be working.
Patrick: "Slack off" 是坏的。
Mandy: One is good, one is bad. Listeners, are you working hard today?
Patrick: Or are you slacking off? Be honest!
Patrick:
Mandy: Tell us in the comments: What do you do when you want to slack off for a few minutes?
Patrick: Thanks for listening. See you next time!
Patrick:
