This weekend, our Baltimore Gluten Free Meet Up group screened the Celiac Project film. After, we held a Q and A with Samra Blanchard, MD from the University of Maryland Celiac Center. One question that came up had an answer that surprised many. It was: After a Celiac Diagnosis, how often should I have a Celiac appointment?
Answer: After diagnosis, it’s important to be checked annually. There are tests that need to be run every year including Antibody Levels, Hemoglobin, Iron, Folate, B12, Zinc, Vitamin D and Calcium. Since Celiac Disease is linked to Osteoporosis and Osteopenia, bone density testing (called a DEXA Scan), will be ordered. Additionally, having one autoimmune disease makes it more likely to have another, so tests for Thyroid function and other autoimmune symptoms will be monitored.
Stay tuned for other great questions from the evening. In the meantime, here's an article I wrote with my Daughter's Celiac Doctor: The 5 Things a Celiac Doctor Wants you to Know About Celiac Disease.
