It's summer time here on the reservation! and our youth are out on their summer break, so we have a lot of summer programs going on for the youth keeping them busy during this time.
One program is the Gardening and Food Ways project that just got underway, and we will be having regular updates on this particular project here on the podcast.
On this episode the youth harvested carrots for the first time ever in preparation of the soil for their garden, and we also sowed some seeds as well and planted a variety of starts including summer squash and chili peppers.
We also cleaned the garden and showed the youth how to identify edible weeds like verdolagas (wild purslane) that grow around the garden and most importantly explained to the youth how many Yaqui and native tribes foraged for wild greens and other wild foods that the desert provides for native people.
