Description

Krista’s guest for this episode is Denzel Allen, a physical educator, the founder of Power of Strength, and a firm believer in lifelong learning. As a former D1 footballer, Denzel is fully aware of the positive effect of exercise on his wellbeing and he is pleased to be able to provide a service that helps his clients build increased strength, cultivate a growth mindset and lead physically active lives. Krista and Denzel discuss the value of getting vulnerable and comfortable with their truth and Denzel reveals that his diaries are so brutally honest he would only let others read them after he dies. They talk about transparency, authenticity, and the importance of being accepted and loved for who they are rather than who they pretend to be.

In the wake of George Floyd’s killing and the Black Lives Matter protests, Denzel encourages us all to hold a mirror up to ourselves and examine what stereotypical messages we have absorbed about race and gender through social conditioning and the media. He talks about the concept of privilege and explains how making a conscious effort to appreciate the disadvantages that someone might face simply due to their race could lead to a greater sense of empathy and inspire us to actively challenge racist attitudes. As a black business owner, he is encouraged by the support he has received from his local community and hopes that the recent calls for increased awareness, transparency, and accountability will result in a more enlightened and anti-racist society.
