Always guess the cliche, and you won't be disappointed. As part of our RErotica series, we’ve slipped under the covers with the incredibly strange 1994 Bruce Willis psycho-sexual thriller Color of Night, directed by veteran Richard Rush.
Willis stars as Dr. Bill Capa, a New York therapist reeling from the very dramatic suicide of one of his patients. Retreating to Los Angeles to stay with his unfathomably rich college buddy Bob (Scott Bakula) in his oddly shaped mansion, Bill sits in on a group therapy session, which introduces a rogues gallery of suspects, including Lance Henriksen and Brad Dourif, when Bob gets murdered in his office. While Bill decides to start living in his dead friend’s house, a mysterious and beautiful young woman (Jane March) suddenly floats into his life. But is she all that she appears to be? Obviously not, otherwise this film wouldn’t be 140 minutes long.
Mailbox rattlesnakes, mid-coitus steak and pasta dinners, ornate headboards, S&M airbrush art and the frequent deployment of the word ‘daffodil’ as a mental health slur litter the twisty path this film takes to its gonzo denouement. Winner of the Razzie Award for worst film of 1994, and recipient of the lofty accolade of Maxim Magazine’s Best Sex Scene Ever, join us as we try our utmost to untangle this tremendously unusual blip in the career of Bruce Willis.
