“Everybody be cool. YOU - be cool.” It’s the REAL most wonderful time of the year, and we at Rewind are indulging our bad selves with episodes on 4 Hallowe’en favourites throughout October. First up, we sink our fangs into the Mexican vampire mayhem of Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk till Dawn, courtesy of super-fan Matt.
Outlaw brothers Seth (an early breakout role for E.R. heartthrob George Clooney) and Richie (screenwriter and at-the-time ascendant indie movie vanguard Quentin Tarantino) Gecko are on their way to a safe haven south of the border after a daring prison break has left a trail of destruction in their wake. They’re forced to hitch a ride at gunpoint with fallen preacher Jacob (Harvey Keitel) and his teenage kids Kate and Scott, piloting their RV to an all-night biker hellhole called The Titty Twister to await the Geckos’ liaison. Little do they know that their troubles are just beginning, as they are confronted with something far worse than the scummy denizens of whip-cracking bikers toting firearm codpieces and carnival barking, erm, cat enthusiasts.
Join us for this special HalloRe’ewind series, as all 4 panelists are choosing a seasonal favourite that holds a special place in our hearts. Today, we talk Tarantino’s enormous impact on the face of 90s cinema, Rodriguez’s outsider cool, exploitation tropes, and exploding rock bands. Come on, Sex Machine!
