Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me? Today’s choice comes courtesy of Matt, who has picked Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 Vietnam nightmare Full Metal Jacket.
Smart-mouthed recruit Pvt. Joker (Matthew Modine), as he’s quickly named by his ruthless new drill instructor (R. Lee Ermey), arrives with his fellow recruits at Parris Island for a hellacious training session. The main target of the instructor’s ire, the clumsy and ill-prepared Pvt. Pyle (Vincent D’Onofrio), puts a brutal full stop on this section, before we are whisked off to the frontline with Joker, now a correspondent with a military magazine. Bullets and bodies ensue.
Joining Pvt. Ridley in the trenches, Gali, Devlin and Patrick discuss the tremendous task of transforming an East London gas works into a theatre of war, the unusual bipartite structure of the film, and Kubrick’s famously exacting directorial style.
