How does it feel to be hunted? Well, greasy mulletted ‘Cajun’ Chance Boudreaux (Jean Claude Van Damme) is about to find out, as he finds himself embroiled in some big game down by the bayou in John Woo’s Hollywood debut Hard Target.
Rolling into town in search of her daddy, Natasha (Yancy Butler, in her first feature) recruits Chance to assist after an, erm, chance meeting in which he rescues her from a mugging with some extremely well-placed slo-mo face kicks. Unfortunately, her dad has already fallen prey to the ruthless Emil Fouchon (Lance Henriksen), who, along with his cold-blooded sidekick Van Cleef (Arnold Vosloo), facilitate the hunting of homeless military veterans on the streets of New Orleans by extremely rich patrons who are seeking a very exclusive thrill. Fouchon soon turns his crosshairs on to the troublesome Chance, as arrows, bullets, and an outrageous amount of doves and pigeons fly.
Join Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt as they rummage in the Bargain Bin to dig out Woo’s truly explosive calling card, blazing a trail from Hong Kong on the back of his incendiary balletic action films to not only establish himself in the big leagues, but also open the door to other filmmakers from the region, while cementing a visual style that quickly became a genre standard.
