What do you say we cut the CHIT-CHAT, A-HOLE?! Or not, as the case may be, as the gang gets together for a listener request episode and discusses Michael Bay’s incendiary Simpson/Bruckheimer action landmark THE ROCK.
Chemical superfreak FBI expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage, kicking off his unlikely but lucrative action star run) is drafted in to advise when disgruntled former Black Ops specialist General Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) swipes a pile of experimental rockets and takes control of Alcatraz Prison, threatening to vaporise San Francisco if his ransom demands for restitution for his fallen comrades isn’t met. Enter the only man to successfully break out of the infamous institution - British spy John Mason (Sean Connery), whose unique knowledge of the layout leads Goodspeed and a crew of special forces in for a rescue mission that results in much patented Bayhem.
With thanks to listener Louis Naum, Gali, Devlin, Patrick & Matt head to the slammer to discuss the halcyon days of the mid-90s actioner, where brash and brawny bros crafted unapologetically brain-bypassing spectacles. But has the film aged like a fine vintage Connery, or is this missile a dud?
