I sat down with my lovely friend Sophie and we had a great conversation about her journey with sport. Sophie has been a talented sportswoman from a young age, and has some fantastic achievements, such as captaining the U23 England Lacrosse Team as well as the 1st Team at Cambridge University. We reflect on how this valuable period in lockdown has allowed Sophie to take a step back from competitive sport and realign with the basic enjoyment that sport offers in its purest form. We emphasise throughout this episode that the fun and appreciation within sport needs to be retained so that it does not become an area of tension within our lives. This has affected Sophie's athletic experience, and we address the interlinking factors of reputation, pressure and expectation within a sporting setting, as well as balancing this with academic commitments. We also speak about the contrasts between individual and team sports and discuss the challenges faced within leadership whilst captaining a team. Additionally, Sophie is amazingly open about her mental health, and we explore the need for a larger conversation surrounding mentality within the sports sphere to support athletes. We really hope you enjoy!
