Description

Diagnosis in mental health is a contentious issue - it has many conflicting sides. In this research edition, NSFT clinical psychologist Corinna Hackmann and senior research fellow for the University of the Arts Hannah Zeilig, who lives with bipolar 1, talk about diagnosis. This is an area they have explored together during a study called INCLUDE and in this paper about collaborative diagnosis.

This podcast gives some insight as to how getting a diagnosis can play out – Hannah and Corinna understand how it is messy, there is no one size fits all. Some people feel enriched by a diagnosis, for lots it doesn't help, they carry a lot of stigma and it becomes dominant in their identity. Corinna explains the journey of diagnosis - it isn't as many clinicians see it - a done deal when delivered.

Hannah gives insight into living with a serious mental illness especially in a pandemic when she feels everyone is telling people to feel better by doing yoga and meditating - which she doesn't find very useful. She has a newly coined term 'mental health lite'.

From her time spent in hospital Hannah knows from fellow patients that there is almost a hierarchy to diagnosis, and even in a time when mental health is so often spoken about, it is still tricky to wear your diagnosis lightly.
