Description

This is a podcast about low mood in teenagers from our school and parent support team, featuring clinical psychologist Alison Woods, Dr Tamara Scully who is based at Thurston Community College and Bethan who is a former student from there.

This reassuring podcast takes a deep dive in to what it is like to be a young person during lockdowns and tier restrictions and answers questions on why this time is especially tricky for teens. Bethan and the psychologists talk about why the pandemic may be inducing low mood in young people - especially looking at how the restrictions are pushing the school students in the opposite direction from their natural process of becoming more independent.

For some great tips on how to overcome low mood, fantastic insight from Bethan and advice on what we have learnt from this pandemic so far - do have a listen.

The research project mentioned in the podcast is the READY trial - this study aims to see if physical activity improves the symptoms of low mood in young people aged 13 – 17 years old. Young people that take part will be asked to attend one of three groups twice a week for 12 weeks. The group activities will either be high intensity exercise, low intensity exercise or social non-exercise based activities. If you, or someone you know, is suffering from low mood you may be interested in taking part in this study.
