”When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people helping.’” – Mr. Rogers.
• Who is my neighbour? The man is seeking for a loophole.
• Many of us become good at seeking for loopholes sometimes.
In his story, Jesus makes the enemy the hero and the teacher.
The Samaritan risked his life to help the Jewish man who was beat up.
• The Samaritan’s love was costly.
• He paid for the man to be at the inn for a considerable time.
• He pledged to cover any extra costs.
• The man wanted to know “who is my neighbour?”
• Jesus told him to “go and be a neighbour.”
• They are in your home
• They are on your street
• They are in your community
1. Mr. Rogers understood the power of loving your neighbour. What is your favourite Mr. Rogers story or memory? What did you learn from him? Just for fun.
2. What are your neighbours like? Describe them. (You decide who is your neighbour).
3. Read 2 Chronicles 28:8-15. What are the similarities between this story and the one Jesus told? How might this have added weight to Jesus’ story, for those listening to him? How does referencing something familiar within a story make it more powerful?
4. Look at Romans 13:8-10. How does the Apostle Paul apply Jesus’ teaching into his own life and teaching? Compare this with Galatians 5:13-26. How is loving your neighbour connected to the fruit of Spirit, (5:22-23)?
5. The Parable Jesus told in Luke 10 is in response to a question from a religious expert. The expert wanted to justify himself as worthy of eternal life. In response, Jesus says to him twice, “Do this and you will live,” vs. 28 and 37. What is the difference between the first time Jesus says this and the second?
6. What does this parable teach us about God’s Kingdom and about Jesus’ mission?
7. The religious expert was looking to justify himself before God. How do you sometimes do the same thing?
8. The religious expert was looking for a loophole so he wouldn’t have to interact with people that he didn’t want to. How do you sometimes do the same thing?
9. What have you learned through this story that God is asking you to make real in your life this week?
1. Reflect on someone you’ve been avoiding, who may need your help. Go and be a neighbour to them. (It might be someone in your home).
