As a contractor, you must be working on a contract that has work requiring a clearance to initiate the clearance process. As much as a company may value you as an employee, they cannot just get you a clearance for no reason. There are managers who have assigned folks that have proved themselves on an unclassified contract to a classified contract for the purposes of getting them a clearance.
