The word we were thinking of was, in fact, 'Yomi'.
From our editor: "The use of the term 'Yomi' in gaming is a relatively recent development. It was coined by developer David Serlin by using the interpretation of the word that means 'reading'.
(words in Japanese can mean different things depending on how they are written, i.e. 'Hana' can mean flower or nose).
He basically used the word for a game he designed that was based around reading your opponents and the fighting game community took it and adapted it into their language."
