Great time with the Boys!
Nothing better than hanging with some old friends singing the songs of the late great Townes Van Zandt! A Texas Troubadour and our hero, a true songwriting legend.
Growing up in a milling town in Central Maine we connected over his music and the characters in his songs he painted pictures of heart break, hopelessness and downtrodden folk much like the people I ran into daily in the towns along the Kennebec. With Mill shutdowns, and so many dairy farms going under. It left many folks out of work, with a dwindling economy and no new career opportunities. People always seem to turn to the booze a drugs for comfort. Watched many a friend and people I knew fall victim to sadness and drug addiction which perpetuated more sadness, and more drug addiction,poverty, hopelessness and crime.
That milling town in Central Maine really started to look and feel like the songs we heard Townes singing about. Which in someways can bring ya some comfort to know the hurts and pains of others you start to relate and empathize with their struggles.
I remember all the times sitting around campfires & along the river banks with a guitar in my hands and a friend at my side wailing into the night singing songs, making memories that will last a forever.
Townes could sure write a sad song but also so beautifully It’s through his music I learned how it’s not just what your hearing and the music of a song. Its the story and what you start to feel as the storyteller brings to life a picture with words
I’ll always cherish these friendships I’ve had for so long. The many memories and stories we share.
