Storms come, they always do. But they pass at some point. Yet, the damage they can leave can last for generations and become anchored into family legacies as well as individual identities. We cannot change anything until we become conscious what choices are available to us. Therefore, we are bringing Toby Cowern back for a second conversation to present his 5 strategic R’s. Many worlds are affected by tragedy at some point and what I mean by worlds are the various niche cultures from family owned businesses, whom are tested over generations in shirt sleeves to shirt sleeves, to corporate executives as well as regular civilians – the intention is to have this list of 5 R’s serve as one credible action plan in various scenarios in bringing it to life. We hope this discussion both educates as well as inspires you in hope. As it can be risky to take on an enemy in any type of frontal assault , we can direct our energy to “how to create and redirect our choices” to move from victim to hero to guide. The 5 R’s offer you the power of choice. It is important to have counter narratives so we know others have gone before us in challenging times and prospered. Toby has seen real life examples of when rebuilding has gone right as well as when fellow humans throw in the towel after the first R. Our examples will span intensity as well as wealth bracket given various disastrous events to cover a variety of scenarios relatable to the viewer or listener. Changing our thinking can change our lives and thus, our legacies. Reduce, Repair, Rebuild, Re-role/Retire and Relocate:3:50 Reduce: What do you do when you are challenged or undermined in your worldview when the evidence is contrary? What tools and soft skills give us the ability to overcome trauma? 22:22 Repair: From relationship building to repairing, the pandemic caused strain in families in who could argue over who wore masks and who didn’t, who got written out of wills based on their emotional governance, and which relationships were maintained? This “R” refers interpersonal skills, empathy, active listening, reasoning and understanding of other people as well as being/staying motivated to do what is necessary. When is staying silent or forgiving another a superpower compared to getting your dog in the fight? How much do we allow resentment to govern our existence or our legacies? How can the elderly be encouraged to come forward in their presence and skill sets as super powers as intermediaries? 41:11 Rebuild: This R includes psychological rebuilding in how able are you to rebuild mentally? Rebuilding may not mean you build exactly as you did before, when your worldview has now changed and you have a new way of looking at things. With any crisis, when do you choose to engage in new habits, social circles and other influences – to embark on a transformative journey in growing your mindset?53:30 Re-role/retire: In the menu of choices and ownership, invest in the best advice to do the inner and outer work for your legacy. A variety of advisors can see blind spots and angles you will miss based on their experiences or to pre-empt new actions in foresight. If finances are a limitation, leverage the resources and network you have in the tenacity of exhausting all options.1:09:30 Relocate. The video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joKikS0fdgM-Legacy Planning is a boutique advisory firm based in Beverly Hills, California (USA) that specializes in the coaching and advisory work around personal legacies.
