Sareta and Chioma had the pleasure of speaking with Francesca Marotta, an award-winning designer, creative director, fashion stylist, magazine editor-in-chief, and proud indigenous woman of the world. Born in Sicily of Arab descent, Francesca has lived in Belgium, London (via Los Angeles) and expresses her passion through fashion since she fell in love with the sewing machine at a young age. Self-employed since she was 18, her work has been featured on all continents except for the North Pole. From a young age, Francesca's experiences with discrimination have led her to keep social justice and professional integrity at the forefront of her ethos. \
During this episode, they discussed topics such as white privilege; diversity, inclusion and representation in fashion; pressures on women within a male-dominated industry; fashion as art versus clothing; fame and empire building against integrity; investing in yourself; and greenwashing - specifically referencing Love Island's decision to switch their fast fashion sponsorship for second hand eBay cast wardrobe. Based on Francesca's extensive experience, she shared advice for those looking to build a career in fashion: "Take no sh*t and believe in yourself."
