Catechism Class - LD5 Q15 The MYSTERY of Godliness.
In 1st Timothy 3:16, Paul confesses to the young pastor, "And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."
One of the greatest mysteries of all (to us) is the Person of Christ, who was fully God, and fully man. 'God manifest in the flesh.' The catechist addresses this in Lord's Day 5-6 Q15-18. He reminds us:-
Q.15 What kind of mediator and deliverer must we seek? A. One who is a true and righteous man, and yet more powerful than all creatures; that is, one who is at the same time true God!
How can we hope to understand this? Only by rigidly sticking to the Biblical teaching on the matter. To attempt to work it out by human reason will lead us to error, as it has done many times in the past. The good news, is that because of Christ's atoning work at the Cross we have a Brother in Glory, who will lead us to glory also, and when we get there, we will fully understand the Mystery of Godliness.
