Today on #coffeewithatherapist, we are talking about how to get over a break-up and some tangible ways to evaluate what you'll need to work on before getting into another relationship.
The most loving thing that we can do for ourselves and our potential future partners after a break-up is to work on healing past relationship wounds. If we gloss it over, move on quickly or push down our feelings by acting out (drinking, one-night stands, disordered eating, over-working) or jump into a relationship quickly without healing, we will take those relationship wounds into our next relationship and it will impact how we view our partner and how we love (or distance) ourselves from them. It will also impact our capacity for being vulnerable and sharing intimacy.
If after watching this video, you struggle to heal past relationship wounds or have a lot of negative thoughts/beliefs about the world, yourself, or others after a break-up, I'd highly recommend that you work with a therapist on this because it's likely that you have some unresolved relationship trauma or hurt that in therapy, can be resolved. (Let me know if you need any help finding resources -- I've even helped people in other countries get connected to their local mental health resources).
