Summary

In this episode of the Breve Music Podcast, host Jermaine Harris reflects on his musical journey and the reasons behind his decision not to attend music school. He recounts his early experiences with music, starting with piano in childhood and clarinet in sixth grade, which helped shape his identity as a musician. His passion flourished in high school, influenced by his band director, leading him to aspire to become a band director or music theory teacher. However, an undiagnosed neurological issue caused him to reconsider this path due to concerns about potential episodes while teaching. After college and treatment, he felt a renewed desire to pursue music and auditioned for a local music school, gaining admission and contemplating his lifelong dream.

Ultimately, he faced a choice between pursuing a music degree or continuing his marketing career. After attending orientation and realizing he would need to start from scratch without transferable credits, he opted to focus on marketing, influenced by financial concerns, existing student loans, and the impact on his marriage. Although he occasionally feels regret about not pursuing music school, he believes he made the right decision for himself and his family, finding satisfaction in his current job while staying connected to music theory through sharing his experiences.
