Mikhail Laxton is a singer-songwriter from the KuKu Yalanji tribe in Mossman, Far North Queensland, who now calls the province of Ontario in Canada home. Laxton's music has influences of Americana, country, folk rock and blues and all of those are present on his excellent self-titled debut album. There's a range of stories and moods on this album; what the songs have in common is that they're irresistible.
Laxton and I had a wide-ranging conversation when we spoke recently, talking about how songwriting helped him manage depression, what it was like to embark on a career in a different country, and the Rabbitohs. And given that many years ago I did a stint on Canadian university radio and a street-press music magazine, I relished the chance to find out what was happening in the Canadian music scene, of which Laxton is now a part. Hopefully he'll return to home shores at some point, though, so we have a chance to see him play these wonderful songs live and experience the passionate entertainer who is so evident on the album.
