This week we're reading chapters five and six from Age of Opportunity by Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D. Chapter five is titled "Protecting Adolescents from Themselves." We discuss some statistics related to adolescent behavior, deterring risky behavior, the peer effect, and how the social brain impacts the way adolescents think and behave. Chapter six is called "The Importance of Self-Regulation." We go over research that has been done to test self-regulation skills and the impact they have across the lifespan. In particular, we discuss the famous marshmallow test and Dr. Steinberg's Now or Later test. We also cover self-regulation during adolescence, determination, grit, noncognitive skills, motivation, and self-control. These chapters impacted us quite a bit.
