This week we're discussing chapter seven from Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant: "What it Takes to 'Get It.'" This might be one of our favorite episodes of The SLP Book Club podcast yet, because it really gets to the heart of what it means to be a speech therapist, teacher, or other provider who works with autistic children. There are some people who just naturally get it: they pay attention, provide support as needed, demonstrate flexibility, and are a regulating factor for the children they work with. Other people might not naturally have "it," but they work hard to learn all they can and support autistic children and their families. And then, unfortunately, some people just don't have or getit. They focus on taking back control, sticking to a plan, and compliance without consideration for what the child really needs. Our discussion of this chapter was very personal, with lots of examples from our own work that we hope you can relate to. Enjoy :)
