Description

On Babble Riot's fourth episode, Elle and Lo get political.

Make sure your seatbelts are securely fastened for this one (especially if you lean right)! We examine the way in which the US differs from the other countries Elle has lived in based on overall happiness, work/life balance, healthcare, parental leave, childcare, and the cost of living. Though not as cheeky as previous episodes, we hope you can take something away from it, learn something new or feel inspired to further educate yourself on political topics.

*Both Elle and Lo mention socialism in regard to the countries spoken about in today's episode. It is important to note that these countries do not have socialist governments but rather social democratic governments that are still very much capitalist societies. They use the term "socialism/socialist" to point out the many differences when it comes to economic and social welfare of the American people vs. the people of Germany, for example. They want to make clear that socialist ideals and governments that incorporate social programs are not radical but rather in favor of the people on a broad spectrum. Not wanting to live paycheck to paycheck is not radical. Wanting to be paid a fair and livable wage is not radical. Believing that it is OK for 10% of the US population to account for 70% of the country's wealth whilst the bottom 50% account for only 3% of the population's wealth is radical. Especially when you take into account that the bottom 50% are working much longer (in hours and in age) and almost always harder. Countries that have social democratic governments do not allow for such an abysmal wealth gap and thus rank higher in overall happiness and wellbeing than the US.
