Topics of Discussion

Objectivism: is the philosophy of rational individualism founded by Ayn Rand (1905-1982). It holds that there is no greater moral goal than achieving one's happiness. But one cannot achieve happiness by wish or whim. It requires rational respect for the facts of reality, including the facts about our human nature and needs. It requires living by objective principles, including moral integrity and respect for the rights of others. Politically, Objectivists advocate laissez-faire capitalism. Objectivism is benevolent, holding that the universe is open to human achievement and happiness and that each person has within him the ability to live a rich, fulfilling, independent life.

Iron Man / Tony Stark plays in this field by operating in a self-centered, selfish manner. Objectivism believes people acting in self-interest is the only way to achieve things. Don’t let moochers in society hold you down.

Premise of Discussion

Iron Man/Tony Stark and Ayn Rand’s Objectivism. Is Tony Stark an Objectivist or Libertarian hero?

Shakespeare: This initial Thor outing was directed by Kenneth Branagh, director and actor of such Shakespearean adaptations like Much Ado About NothingHenry V, and Hamlet. A lot of the common Shakespearean themes are at work and accentuated in Thor.

There is brother vs. brother, each vying for their father’s love like the children of King Lear (this time Odin is Lear). The hubris of it almost destroys it all. The mortals and gods interacting in the face of the fantastic has tones from A Midsummer Night’s Dream or The Tempest.

Even more interesting is Loki in this, playing up a version of Richard III from Richard III or Cassius from Julius Caesar.

Premise of Discussion

Is Thor, the film, relatable as a quasi-Shakespearean work?
