What makes a heist film funny?
In Community Season 6, there is a brilliant episode called “Grifting 101”. The premise of the episode is this class is there and taught by a con-man played by the brilliant Matt Berry. Several members of the main cast take his class, an actual con where they give him money to learn nonsense and by take are being grifted. They turn to Jeff Winger, a failed lawyer to fight back. After watch The Sting.
Two grifters team up to pull off the ultimate con. Following the murder of a mutual friend, aspiring con man Johnny Hooker teams up with old pro Henry Gondorff to take revenge on the ruthless crime boss responsible, Doyle Lonnegan. Hooker and Gondorff set about implementing an elaborate scheme, one so crafty that Lonnegan won't even know he's been swindled. As their big con unfolds, however, things don't go according to plan, requiring some last-minute improvisation by the undaunted duo.
Robert Redford and Paul Newman are masterful.
Community gang then does an homage to the Sting themselves.
According to Duncan Campbell, “The heist films permit us to live vicariously as criminals: exciting risk-takers who break the law without hurting anyone. This victimlessness – or as close to it as possible – is crucial in the mythologizing of a heist.”
