Topics of Discussion
Determinism and Free Will, Part 1: Loki
Now, this will not be the last time we see this, but Loki Season 1 is a testament or challenge to the idea of whether free will is real or not.
Determinism or a deterministic point of view holds that human behavior is predictable and in fact governed by both internal and external factors that guide it. Basically, we are sophisticated machines. The roots of determinism are in the sciences and focus on the idea that what will happen will happen, pattern, predictable.
Free will suggests that humans have the ability to make genuine choices that are not dictated by our environment and laws of nature. We have a choice and are NOT bound to do what is already pre-determined to be our outcome.
Family Ties: Black Widow
There is an interesting undercurrent in Black Widow: family is not just about blood. This is the case for Natasha who we meet as a young girl in this movie along with her “family” which is made up of a fake sister, father and mother.
The family isn’t really fake though because the bonds they make are real to them.
In many ways, this speaks to the idea that one might have two types of families: blood families and friend families. Friends are the family you choose. The bonds between them can be just as powerful and meaningful, if not more, than those with a blood family because you chose them of your free will.
Premise of Discussion
What do we think about Free Will vs. Determinism in Loki? What do we think of family bonds as seen in Black Widow?
