In this episode, Alex talks to Ghanaian feminist writer and blogger, Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah. In in 2022 she was listed by the BBC as one of the 100 most influential and inspiring women around the world. She co-founded the award-winning blog, Adventures from the Bedrooms of African Women, and has written for The Guardian, Open Democracy, Feminist Africa and This is Africa, and other publications. Her book, The Sex Lives of African Women, was published in 2021. An Economist Best Book of the Year, it was hailed as "Touching, joyful, defiant—and honest,” celebrating African women’s unique journeys towards sexual pleasure and liberation in an empowering and subversive collection of intimate stories.
We discuss Nana's dream feminist dinner party, starting with some wonderful guests; Rita Nketia, a queer activist from Ghana, Rose Afriyie, a writer and social impact consultant and the poet and activist Maya Angelou. Against a backdrop of Ogi, Narah and Ammarae, Nana and her guests feast on calamari, couscous, grilled chicken and ice cream. We discuss her book, and the world of female sexuality and gender activism.
