THE SONG: Gloria

Gloria was originally written and composed in Italian by Umberto Tozzi and Giancarlo Bigazzi. Tozzi first recorded Gloria, a love song, in 1979. When Laura Branigan started work on her first album,1982’s Branigan, she was teamed with producer Greg Mathieson, who did the keyboards and arrangements on Tozzi's Gloria. He suggested Branigan cover the song. Branigan recorded an English re-invention of "Gloria" as a character study of, in her words, "a girl that's running too fast for her own steps," the cover lyrics of which were written by Trevor Veitch. Branigan's version earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. The 1982 single of Gloria stayed on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for 36 weeks, then a record for a female artist. In 2019, The St. Louis Blues of the NHL started playing Branigan’s Gloria after home game wins and the crowds loved it.  The St. Louis Blues went on to win the Stanley Cup that year.
