Description

For this sound project, our group started from the idea of audio logs, which are commonly used in video games to immerse the player. They are used to give lore elements, to explain what happened in past events or even to give hints. After sharing our ideas on which story we would like to tell, we proceeded to work with a story creation method that Max used while roleplaying : each of us gave elements about how the story would unfold. One person chose the area where the action will take place, another person chose the context, someone else the reason for the space journey, etc... At this point the idea of audio logs was a little bit tuned down and we focused on the dialogs.

To create the script for the dialogs, we developed a workflow with an audio recorder and someone had the mission to type what was being said. Using a very small character context (including name, age, mission role) The idea was to try giving a natural tone to the discussion. After finishing the first draft out, we used some foley sounds in the montage to give some depth and ambient sounds. After listening to it, we thought back about the audio logs idea and proceeded to develop the rest of our different audio files around this thinking.

What’s next ?

We thought this excerpt from a story could be developed into an installation later, using Unreal Engine 5 to model in 3D the space where the action takes place or to create other pieces present in the podcast to give volume to the sound work.
